The frogfish family Antennariidae was first proposed in 1822 by Polish zoologist Feliks Paweł Jarocki. Its name derives from Antennarius, its type genus, which suffixes -ius to antenna, alluding to the first dorsal spine being adapted into a tentacle used as a lure. The family is classified within the suborder Antennarioidei of the order Lophiiformes, and is regarded with its sister taxon Tetrabrachiidae as the most derived clade within that suborder. The taxonomy of the group has been subject to recent revision: a 2025 phylogenetic study found previous treatments paraphyletic, leading to the recognition of multiple subfamilies including Fowlerichthyinae, which is thought to be the most basal member of the family.
