The family Callionymidae, whose name comes from Greek words meaning "beautiful name," consists of small, bottom-dwelling marine fish commonly called dragonets. They are percomorphs found mostly in the tropical western Indo-Pacific, living near sandy seafloors at depths around two hundred meters. The family includes 139 species spread across nineteen genera. Dragonets are sometimes mistaken for gobies because they look and behave similarly, but males have noticeably longer dorsal fins, and females have lower jaws that stick out.

The sister family Draconettidae contains very similar fish, though they are rarely seen. Within Callionymidae, the fossil genus †Protonymus, known from Middle Miocene skeletons found in Krasnodar, Russia, appears to be one of the most primitive members. Aside from this genus, one Callionymus species (C. macrocephalus), and a possible Diplogrammus specimen, fossil skeletons of the family are extremely rare. Otoliths assigned to Callionymus have been found dating back to the Middle Eocene.

Dragonets are often vividly colored with cryptic patterns. Their bodies are long and lack scales. A large spine on the preopercle is a key feature, and in some species it is venomous. All fins are large and showy; the first dorsal fin usually has four spines, and in males the first spine may have filamentous extensions. They have flattened, triangular heads with big mouths and eyes, and their tail fins are fan-shaped and tapered. The largest species, the longtail dragonet (Callionymus gardineri), reaches 30 centimeters, while the Saint Helena dragonet (Callionymus sanctaehelenae) grows to only 2 centimeters. Many species show strong sexual dimorphism: males and females differ in color and pattern, and males have much taller dorsal fins—extremely so in the high-finned dragonet (Synchiropus rameus).

Spawning happens in late afternoons before sunset and follows four stages: courtship display, pairing, ascending, and release of eggs and milt. Both sexes display, but males do so more often; females display only when ready to spawn. Displays involve spreading pectoral and caudal fins and moving around the other fish. Males may also spread their dorsal fins, open and close their mouths repeatedly, and rub the female's abdomen. If a female accepts, the pair forms.
