The scarlet or freckled frogfish, *Abantennarius coccineus*, was first described as *Chironectes coccineus* and then *Antennarius coccineus*. It inhabits tropical waters, primarily in the Indo-East-Pacific region, but is absent from Hawaii. This fish stays in shallow ocean zones, hiding among reefs, rocky mounds, or sponges to avoid predators. Its coloration varies widely, from tan and brown to vivid reds and yellows, and it reaches a maximum length of 13 centimeters (5.1 inches). Taxonomically, it is identified by its pectoral rays, dark patches on its fins and body, and a lack of a distinct tail base. The species poses no harm to humans and is not targeted by fisheries for food, though it has been collected for studies on reef-fish abundance and as bycatch in shrimp trawling. In 1904, David Starr Jordan and Barton W. Evermann synonymized *Antennatus coccineus* (then *Antennarius coccineus*) with *Antennatus drombus* (*Antennarius drombus*), but they were later separated based on differences in pectoral ray count, esca color, and the abundance of small dark blotches on the body and fins. The species was incorrectly named *Antennarius nexilis* by John Otterbein Snyder in 1904, *Antennarius stigmaticus* by James Douglas Ogilby in 1912, *Antennarius leucus* by Henry W. Fowler in 1934, *Abantennarius neocaledoniensis* by Édouard Le Danois in 1964, *Antennarius moai* by Gerald R. Allen in 1970, and *Antennarius immaculatus* by Le Danois in 1970. Despite many name changes, *Antennarius coccineus* was the most common name until 2012, when DNA profiling and genetic analysis showed the fish had been incorrectly placed in the *Antennarius* genus and was actually in *Antennatus*. It has since remained named *Antennatus coccineus* from 2012 onwards. **Description** The scarlet frogfish shows great variation in physical appearance. Reports describe it in colors such as pale tan, mottled red, and yellow, often with small dark spots on the body.
