Plot

In 1983, Ezekiel "Zeke" Stone, a New York City Police Robbery-Homicide detective, arrested Gilbert Jax for raping Stone's wife Rosalyn. Two months later, Stone died in an unrelated incident and went to Hell because he had taken pleasure in the killing. In 1998, a mass breakout from Hell occurred, led by a 4000-year-old Canaanite priestess named Ashur Badaktu. The Devil, largely powerless on Earth, made a deal with Stone: return to Earth, track down all 113 escapees, and if he succeeded before one of them killed him, he would earn a second chance at life on Earth. The Devil often hindered Stone's work by withholding information or giving cryptic clues. An angel suggested that Stone had served God's purpose as well as the Devil's when he killed his wife's rapist. Both Stone and the escapees possess superhuman powers tied to their time in Hell. As immortal souls, they are unharmed by fire or falls, do not bleed, and have no heartbeat. They cannot be killed, and injuries can only be inflicted to their eyes, or by another escaped damned soul.
