Formula One Group

The companies that promote the Formula One World Championship and control its commercial rights.

The Formula One Group is the collection of companies that promotes the FIA's Formula One World Championship and exploits the sport's commercial rights, from television deals to race promoter fees. For four decades it was shaped by Bernie Ecclestone, a former team boss who ran the business as chief executive after winning control of those rights. Liberty Media bought the group in 2017, and it is now led by Stefano Domenicali as president and chief executive, with Chase Carey as non-executive chairman. It trades on the Nasdaq as a tracking stock under the tickers FWONA and FWONK.

Background

Its roots lie in the Formula One Constructors' Association, formed in 1974 to organise the sport commercially for the teams. Ecclestone took charge of FOCA in 1978 and fought FISA over commercial rights until the Concorde Agreement of March 1981 gave FOCA control of TV negotiations. In 1987 he set up Formula One Promotions and Administration, later known as Formula One Management, to handle TV rights. In 1995 the FIA handed the commercial rights to Formula One Administration for a 14-year period. SLEC Holdings became the holding company in 1996, and stakes then passed through EM.TV, the Kirch Group and a trio of banks before CVC Capital Partners took majority control in 2006.
