Background
Verstappen was born on 30 September 1997 in Hasselt, Belgium, and grew up in Maaseik. His father, Jos Verstappen, had driven in Formula One, and his mother, Sophie Kumpen, raced karts. He began karting at four and was racing in championships by seven, winning Belgian and Dutch titles from 2005 onward. In 2010 he joined the CRG factory team on the international scene, and in 2013, aged 15, he won two European Championships and a World Championship in one season, an achievement without precedent in karting. After a 2014 rookie year in FIA European Formula 3 with Van Amersfoort, where he finished third, he signed for Toro Rosso at 17 through the Red Bull Junior Team and became the youngest driver to start a Formula One race.
