Plot
Arianna, the Princess of Caledonia, travels to an unknown ruin to perform a centennial ritual, escorted by the Protagonist and Flavio. On the first floor of Ginnungagap, they meet Bertrand and Chloe, who are investigating the ruins. The protagonist experiences a vision guided by a mysterious voice, awakening his transformation powers. Progress halts at a lowered bridge; Bertrand reveals a Guard member is an expert on bridges, and the party heads into the Yggdrasil Labyrinth to find him. A power stone is needed to operate the bridge, obtainable only from the lair of the Chimaera. After slaying the beast, the protagonist has another vision as more power awakens. With the power stone, the bridge is repaired, and the party ventures deeper into Ginnungagap, defeating the Basilisk. Further progress requires the protagonist to gain more power by defeating the Flame Demon. They encounter guild Esbat, who discourages further exploration. After braving the second floor and defeating Arachne the Spider Queen, the Black Guardian tells the protagonist he lacks power for the ritual and must defeat another great evil. The party pushes deeper, clashes with guild Esbat, and defeats Scylla. With new power, they journey to Ginnungagap B3F to complete the ritual. The Black Guardian explains that as the Fafnir Knight, the protagonist must leave his world behind to become the next Black Guardian. The party cannot bear to leave him and returns. Bertrand vanishes due to a ritual anomaly; the party stabilizes the ritual and faces Bertrand as the Demi-Fafnir. The anomaly compromises the system sealing The Calamity, which will soon be unleashed. The party resolves to destroy the Calamity and is told to seek the Ruler of the Heavens for aid.
Gameplay
The game offers two modes: Classic mode, which uses custom characters and maps as in other entries, and Story mode, which features an expansive story with preset characters, cutscenes, and voice acting. In both modes, players must draw their own dungeon maps. Three difficulty settings are available: Picnic for easy gameplay, Normal for moderate difficulty, and Expert for the toughest gameplay.
Characters
Story Mode provides five preset playable characters. The Fafnir Knight is the player's avatar, a young man from the Midgard Library sent to High Lagaard to assist the Duke of Caledonia's daughter. Flavio, an 18-year-old adventurer and the avatar's best friend, is energetically positive and sometimes acts as a voice of reason. Arianna Caledonia, the 18-year-old daughter of the Duke, is ladylike but scatterbrained, escorted through Ginnungagap for her ritual. Bertrand de Gervaise, a knight of unknown age first met in Ginnungagap, has a lazy personality but can be serious and protective, keeping his past hidden. Chloe, a 13-year-old girl first met in Ginnungagap and a distant relative of Bertrand, is asocial, calls people by their job rather than name, and has an unnatural love of meat.
