Gameplay
Etrian Odyssey Nexus borrows its interface and stat system from Etrian Odyssey V, but with a key change: magic attack and magic defense are now tied to INT and WIS instead of the universal TEC stat. Stat caps have been raised to 255, up from 99. Weapons can be forged to boost their stats, and this process can also unlock or enhance stat bonuses and skills linked to them. Character portraits are not tied to class, so any portrait can be used for any party member. The game includes its own default portraits as well as returning ones from Etrian Odyssey V, all of which offer color customization for skin, hair, and eyes. Players can also assign a voice bank to each character at creation. The Force system and subclassing both return. Every class has its own Force Boost and Force Break. Subclassing becomes available after the midway point, letting a character learn skills from another class. Skill progression is divided into three pages: Novice skills are available from the start, Veteran skills unlock after level 20, and Master skills after level 40. Skill caps and requirements are kept low to make managing skill points easier when subclassing. Players can choose from four difficulty settings: Picnic, Basic, Expert, and Heroic. Picnic can be selected at any time during a playthrough, but once chosen, the player cannot switch out of it. Heroic is functionally identical to Expert, but it can only be selected when starting a new playthrough. Choosing Heroic prevents the player from switching to a lower difficulty mid-playthrough and also blocks carrying over past data if used for a New Game+. Instead of a single massive dungeon, the game adapts the overworld system from Etrian Odyssey IV to present its strata. Upon leaving Maginia, the player is taken to a world map where they can choose which dungeon to explore. Main dungeons typically have three floors, and plot-based or NPC-related events can unlock sub-dungeons. Sub-dungeons are much shorter, consisting of only one floor, but they end with an optional boss. After clearing a main dungeon, the player unlocks a gather point where they can collect materials from that dungeon without entering it. These materials can include monster drops, gathered items, and even conditional or rare drops.
