Edelgard

The Flame Emperor who wages war to destroy the rule of Crests.

Edelgard von Hresvelg is one of the main characters in Fire Emblem: Three Houses (2019) and its spin-off, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes (2022). As the heir to the Adrestian Empire and leader of the Black Eagles student house at Garreg Mach Monastery, she begins as an ally and student of protagonist Byleth. However, a mid-game plot twist reveals her true identity as the enigmatic Flame Emperor. Under this guise, she plots to overthrow the Church of Seiros and conquer Fódlan's other nations to create a society where Crests do not dictate social status. Her character has been praised for its depth, though critics have noted her instigation of war and the rushed presentation of her specific story path.

Quick Facts

Character: Edelgard von Hresvelg
Affiliation: Adrestian Empire
First appears: Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Lore & Background

Edelgard possesses long white hair and lilac eyes, a physical change resulting from childhood experiments where she was subjected to forced implantation of two Crests. Only one survivor among ten siblings, she suffered lasting psychological trauma while attempting to become a worthy heir. Despite already holding the Minor Crest of Seiros, she was given the Crest of Flames by force, drastically shortening her lifespan. Her ambition is driven by this suffering; she allies with the mysterious faction known as Those Who Slither in the Dark to wage war against the Church and dismantle the system where noble bloodlines hold sway over social status. In Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, set in a parallel universe, she instead cuts ties with those who slither in the dark and declares war two years later on the Church of Seiros.

Reader's Guide

To access Edelgard's protagonist route in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, players must select the Black Eagles House at the start of the game and fulfill certain requirements to join her cause. In combat, she functions as a magic user capable of long-range attacks, though her specific class progression depends on player choices. Her support conversations with Byleth reveal her stoic nature and deep trauma regarding her experiments. Outside the main story, she appears in Fire Emblem Heroes, receiving a legendary form in February 2020 and a Choose Your Legends form in August 2020. In May 2021, a fallen form reminiscent of Hegemon Edelgard was added. She also serves as an emblem unit in Fire Emblem Engage alongside Dimitri and Claude, with the game randomly selecting which leader is active at the start of each turn.
