The dark half is entirely invented and not part of established Fire Emblem canon. Servants of the Light Goddess Naga—Sai, Shea, and an amnesiac woman named Lyn—encounter Hati and Skoll, who have recruited another amnesiac named Dimitri. In the second dark chapter, Fenris's forces plan an attack while Naga's servants Erma and Yuni investigate. These characters and events are fictional.

Fire Emblem Shadows received generally unfavorable reviews, with a Metacritic score of 37/100 based on five reviews, and was ranked the second-worst reviewed game of 2025 on the platform. Critics felt the gameplay was too simple and lacked depth in its social deduction elements, with Polygon's Giovanni Colantonio criticizing microtransactions that allowed players to overwhelm others with stronger gear. GameSpot's Cameron Koch noted the game went by too quickly for effective social deduction, and Nintendo Life's PJ O'Reilly found the story rigid and basic. The game's revenue was modest: $90,000 in its first week (compared to Fire Emblem Heroes' $400,000) and $200,000 in its first month, with over half from Japanese players. Despite negative reception, the game's incarnation of Lyn was added to Fire Emblem Heroes, causing a surge in revenue for that game.
