Krennic first appears in the 2016 film Rogue One, where he is a Lieutenant Commander, later Commander, in the Galactic Republic Special Weapons group. He rescues his old friend Galen Erso from Separatist agents and later manipulates him to work on the Death Star project after the Empire's formation. The novel Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel also explains how Krennic's interrogation of Poggle the Lesser kickstarted the Empire's Death Star Project.

In Rogue One, Krennic captures Galen Erso to force his continued work on the Death Star. He tests the superlaser on Jedha at Tarkin's request, killing many but not Saw Gerrera, who survives the test and is later killed on Jedha by the Death Star's superlaser. After Tarkin wrests control of the weapon, Krennic confronts Galen on Eadu, where Galen is mortally wounded during a Rebel attack. Krennic later meets Darth Vader on Mustafar, seeking an audience with Emperor Palpatine, but is Force-choked and dismissed. He is killed on Scarif when the Death Star fires on the planet at Tarkin's order.

Orson Krennic represents a different type of Imperial villain: a working-class outsider who rose through force of will rather than birth. His character highlights the internal rivalries within the Empire, particularly with Grand Moff Tarkin, and the bureaucratic maneuvering behind the Death Star project. Critics and fans generally received Krennic positively, with Ben Mendelsohn's performance noted for its weaselly menace. The character's white cape became a standout visual element. However, some critics argued that Krennic's repeated failures and pursuit of praise weakened him as a threatening presence. Krennic appears in multiple Star Wars media, including the novelization of Rogue One, video games Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, and the novel Star Wars: Thrawn: Treason. He was mentioned in Star Wars Rebels but did not appear due to a creative decision.
