Rhodes operated as Iron Man, ignoring Stane's demands for the armor, and thwarted Stane's takeover attempts. Stane found Stark's armor notes, which were advanced but incomplete, and had scientists decipher them, creating the Iron Monger armor—which Stane considered superior to Stark's.
While homeless, Stark befriended pregnant woman Gertl Anders, who died in childbirth. He promised to protect her child and overcame his alcoholism. Stark joined Rhodes and the Erwin twins to start Circuits Maximus in Silicon Valley, building a prototype gray armor. Stane, seeing Stark as a threat again, abducted Bethany Cabe and sent an attack drone called Circuits Breaker, which Rhodes and Stark defeated.
