Mysterio
A master illusionist and enduring foe of Spider-Man.
Mysterio is a name used by multiple supervillains in Marvel Comics, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The character debuted in *The Amazing Spider-Man* #13 in June 1964. Mysterio ranks among Spider-Man’s most persistent foes and is part of his rogues gallery. He has clashed with other heroes, such as Daredevil. In the *Wolverine: Old Man Logan* storyline, the primary antagonist is the Red Skull, not Mysterio. In *Spider-Man: Fake Red*, a different person uses the Mysterio identity as the villain, but does not become Venom.
The first and most famous Mysterio is Quentin Beck, a former special-effects artist, illusionist, and actor who turned to crime. The second incarnation, Daniel Berkhart, is a stuntman originally hired by J. Jonah Jameson to impersonate Mysterio’s ghost before taking on the role permanently. The third, Francis Klum, is a mutant with teleportation abilities who blames Spider-Man for the loss of his leg. Note that Mysterion is a distinct character who uses that name, not a separate incarnation of Mysterio.
The character has appeared in various media, including films, TV shows, and video games. Mary Kate Wiles voiced an original composite version named Frances Beck in *Ultimate Spider-Man* in 2016. Jake Gyllenhaal portrayed Mysterio in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film *Spider-Man: Far From Home* (2019).
In publication history, Mysterio was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, first appearing in *The Amazing Spider-Man* #13. It was later retconned that the aliens seen in *The Amazing Spider-Man* #2 were actually the Tinkerer and his men in disguise, not Mysterio. Like the Kingpin, Mysterio has crossed over to become a major villain for Daredevil, notably in the “Guardian Devil” storyline, where he nearly pushed Daredevil over the edge.
