Development and release

In 2019, Type-Moon hired former Square Enix director Kazuya Niinō, who had previously worked as Fate/Extra's producer, to establish Type-Moon Studio BB and develop Fate/Extra Record. Studio BB announced the remake for the game's tenth anniversary in July 2020, with designers Arco Wada and Takashi Takeuchi returning to contribute. Bandai Namco joined as publisher in August 2024, announcing an initial release window of 2025 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.

The release was later delayed to spring 2026. Type-Moon and Namco reached an agreement for Namco to withdraw as publisher, leading to an indefinite delay and refunds of all pre-orders. Type-Moon stated development would continue but the overall structure would change. On August 8, 2026, Aniplex was announced as the new publisher, development would resume, Meteorise would participate, and a Nintendo Switch 2 version would be available.

That same day, Kazuya Niinō announced his resignation from Type-Moon and his departure as director for personal reasons, stating he would take a break from game development to focus on his health.
