Lore & Background
Originally established to connect humanity with the divine source known as the Root, the Greater Grail was brought to Japan by three mage families: the Einzbern, Matou, and Tohsaka. They constructed a ritual system requiring seven Masters to summon Heroic Spirits called Servants into battle. The victor is granted access to the vessel's power, allowing them to rewrite reality according to their deepest wish. However, the artifact became corrupted during an earlier iteration of the Holy Grail War.
An entity known as Angra Mainyu, representing all the sins and curses of humanity, was summoned into the vessel itself. This contamination means that any wish granted by the Greater Grail in its current state is twisted to cause destruction rather than salvation. The true nature of this corruption remains hidden until the Fifth Holy Grail War brings it to light. Throughout the narrative, the Grail acts as both a prize and a curse.
Its power is immense enough to alter history or destroy the world, depending on the purity of the wisher's intent. Ultimately, the artifact represents the dangerous intersection of human desire and magical reality, requiring sacrifice to be sealed away permanently.
Reader's Guide
The Greater Grail functions as a massive magical battery and a gateway to the Root of All Worlds, often referred to simply as the Root or Akasha. To activate its wish-granting capabilities, seven Masters must summon Heroic Spirits known as Servants through a ritualistic battle royale. The mana required to sustain this connection is vast, drawing from the land itself and the participants. However, the artifact carries a dark secret discovered during the Fifth War.
Inside the vessel resides Angra Mainyu, an entity representing all the sins of humanity. This corruption means that any wish granted by the Grail in its current state will be twisted to cause destruction rather than salvation. Participants like Kiritsugu Emiya and Shirou Emiya eventually realize that destroying the vessel is necessary to prevent global catastrophe. The three founding families—the Einzbern, Matou, and Tohsaka—maintain the system in Fuyuki City, guarding its secrets across generations.
