Lore & Background
EMIYA was born from the future self of Shirou Emiya. According to writer Kinoko Nasu, Shirou's future persona would originally have turned out to be the antagonist Gilgamesh, but the staff changed him to Archer. Nasu stated that Shirou still has potential to become a Heroic Spirit. In the Unlimited Blade Works route, hints are sent that Shirou might become Archer and that Rin would be with him to support him emotionally. In the Heaven's Feel route from the original visual novel, Nasu did not specify whether Shirou would become the same Archer. Shirou's fate in the Heaven's Feel route was left up to the players' interpretation because of Shirou's apparent resurrection. The Unlimited Blade Works storyline presents Shirou's resolve, and in the Heaven's Feel storyline, he becomes Sakura Matou's ally and abandons his life-long passion of becoming a hero.
Reader's Guide
EMIYA is the future self of Shirou Emiya who became a Counter Guardian after making a contract with the world. His role is complex: he appears as an antagonist in the Unlimited Blade Works route, serving as a catalyst for Shirou's growth and self-discovery. His arc explores the dark side of heroism, showing how an ideal can become a curse when pursued without limits. His primary ability is Projection, allowing him to replicate weapons.
He also possesses high agility and combat experience. His defining moment occurs when his true identity is revealed, forcing Shirou to confront the reality of what his ideals might lead to. Despite his cynical exterior, EMIYA's actions are driven by a desire to prevent his younger self from suffering the same fate. This internal conflict makes him one of the most tragic figures in the series.
Critics have commented on Shirou's different characterizations; his role in each part of the original Fate/stay night visual novel has received positive reaction due to his character development and relationship with the character Archer.

- Writer Kinoko Nasu originally imagined Shirou Emiya as a female character named Ayaka Sajyou who wore glasses, with Saber as male, but swapped their sexes to fit the target demographic.
- Artist Takashi Takeuchi has trouble bringing out Shirou's expressions because of his unique eyebrows, making Shirou the most difficult Fate/stay night character for him to draw.
- Shirou's character theme is 'Emiya', and remixes and other themes were created to focus on important scenes related to his character.
- In the spin-off manga Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!!, Shirou uses a magical card that dresses him in Archer's clothes, with most of his torso covered except his right arm.
