Major expansions
The first named content release, Castor, arrived on December 18, 2003, adding Tech 2 components and ships through research agents, along with improvements to the mission system. During the Castor patch cycle, conquerable stations in 0.0 security systems, the agent mission running system, and NPC agents for currency and faction standing were introduced. Exodus, released on November 17, 2004, introduced alliances between corporations, player owned starbases for claiming lawless solar systems, and deadspace complexes with special loot. Red Moon Rising, on December 16, 2005, introduced 39 new ships including carrier, mothership, and Titan-class capital ships, expanded the COSMOS feature, and added four Asian-inspired bloodlines: Achura for Caldari, Jin-Mei for Gallente, Khanid for Amarr, and Vherokior for Minmatar. A further expansion followed on November 29, 2006.
Changes to expansions
On May 6, 2014, at Fanfest, CCP announced a shift from two expansions per year to ten expansions per year on a six-week rapid release cycle. In September 2015, CCP stated that while the five-week release cycle would continue for quality of life changes, ship balance, visual upgrades, new ship skins, and storyline developments, they would also bring back expansions defined as sets of big, connected features making impactful change, with no fixed number per year. In early 2020, CCP announced the splitting of the Eve Online year into four quadrants, each with an overarching theme for releases, events, and offers. The first quadrant for 2020 was named 'Fight or Flight' and was themed around PvP.
