Empires of Eve

A history of Eve Online's player-driven wars and alliances.

Empires of Eve: A History of the Great Wars of Eve is a book by journalist Andrew Groen that chronicles the player-driven conflicts of the online game Eve Online. Groen wrote it to explore the immersive experience shared by the game's 50,000 players, focusing on the in-universe perspective rather than the developers' viewpoint. The book covers betrayals, alliances, and leaders among player factions from 2003 to 2009, illuminating darker corners of the game to highlight player involvement.

Background

Eve Online is a space-based, persistent-world massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed and published by CCP Games. Released in North America and Europe in May 2003, it is a single-universe game shaped by both players and developers. Initially published by Simon & Schuster Interactive until December 2003, CCP later self-published via digital distribution. By February 2013, the game had over 500,000 subscribers. Set more than 21,000 years in the future, humanity colonized the Milky Way after exhausting Earth's resources.

Development

Andrew Groen, a journalist for Wired and Ars Technica, wrote Empires of Eve to cover overlooked parts of the video-game world. He began researching Eve Online after its release, drawn by its focus on causation. A 2003 forum post by player Jade Constantine inspired him. Groen spent two years researching, interviewing over 70 players and examining forum posts and game data. He had never played Eve Online before writing the book and said his idea was not seriously considered; without the book, the game's history might have been lost. He launched a Kickstarter campaign in 2014 to fund it.
