He founded the Toronto Globe, which became Canada's most influential newspaper at the time.[1] The Scottish Canadian journalist and politician George Brown was among those considered a Father of Confederation.[1]
Life and work
He set out from Liverpool with his father for New York on 30 April 1837.[2] A group of Free Church supporters in Toronto persuaded Peter Brown to move his paper to Canada in summer 1843.[2] Brown felt that British Canada offered better possibilities for getting ahead than crowded New York.[2] The Globe in October 1853 became a daily, printed by a steam press.[2]
Brown was present at both the Charlottetown Conference and the Quebec Conference, which were held to discuss Canadian Confederation.[1][3] In 1874, Brown received an appointment to the Canadian senate.[3]
What the cited sources add
The Careless biography notes that Brown was aged 18 when he set out from Liverpool with his father.[2] It states that in March 1843 he was denominated as "Publisher" in the Chronicle.[2] The same source records that a group of Free Church supporters in Toronto signed an invitation and put up a bond to persuade Peter Brown to move his paper.[2] Careless writes that Brown felt British Canada would be more congenial than the American republic.[2]
The biography adds that the Globe in October 1853 became a daily, printed by a steam press.[2] It also notes that by that time the Globe could claim the largest circulation in all British North America.[2]
