Henry Addington

British Tory prime minister and Home Secretary.

Last updated

Henry Addington was born in London on May 30, 1757, the son of a physician.[1] The 1802 Treaty of Amiens, which concluded the Second Coalition during the French Revolutionary Wars, is the achievement for which Addington is most noted, despite it being a disadvantageous peace with Napoleonic France.[2]

Life and work

In 1781, Addington wed Ursula Mary Hammond, whose contribution to their household was an annual income of £1,000.[3] Eight children were born to the couple, but only six lived into adulthood.[3] The central focus of Addington's premiership was foreign affairs.[4] William Pitt the Younger replaced Addington as prime minister, forcing him from office.[2]

On 12 January 1805, Addington was granted the title Viscount Sidmouth.[5]

What the cited sources add

The Napoleon & Empire account states that Addington lacked statecraft and open-mindedness and was devoid of oratorical talent.[1] It notes that in 1804, when the Treaty of Amiens was broken, Addington had to give way to Pitt, who benefited from more prestige.[1] The same source records that Addington was raised to the peerage and made Viscount Sidmouth in 1805, continuing his career as President of the Council in 1805 and again in 1806-1807.[1]
