Eleftherios Venizelos
Cretan Greek statesman who shaped modern Greece.
Last updated
His liberal-democratic policies profoundly modernized Greece.[1]
Life and work
He earned a law degree with excellent grades from the University of Athens in 1881.[2] He served as Prince George's minister of Justice from 1899 to 1901.[3] His pro-Allied foreign policy caused the National Schism with Constantine I.[4] Following the Allied victory, he secured territorial concessions in Western Anatolia and Thrace.[4]
Venizelos' birthplace was Mournies, a location close to Chania in Ottoman Crete; his parents were Kyriakos Venizelos and Styliani Ploumidaki.[5] In the elections of 2 April 1889, Venizelos began his political career in Crete as a member of the island's liberal party.[6] After seeing Chania in flames, Venizelos went to Malaxa near Chania, where roughly 2,000 rebels had gathered, and he made himself their leader; later, with other rebels, he proposed an attack on Turkish forces at Akrotiri.[2][7] On 10 March 1905, rebels assembled in Theriso and declared the political union of Crete with Greece; this event, known as the Theriso revolt, ended with Prince George's resignation as High Commissioner.[2][8]
What the cited sources add
A 2022 biography by Michael Llewellyn-Smith states that Venizelos' father was "born in Crete, in or around 1810, to a family from the Peloponnese."[9] Contemporary historians Chester and Kerofilas wrote that Venizelos' 18th-century ancestors lived in Mystras under the surname Cravvatas.[10] Venizelos wrote that his father Kyriakos took part in the siege of Monemvasia in 1821 with his brother Hatzinikolos.[9] His mother Styliani Ploumidakis descended from Theriso and was distantly related to a 1821 revolution general.[9]
