Suddenly at Midnight (Korean: 깊은밤 갑자기; RR: Gipeunbam gapjagi; also known as *Suddenly in the Dark* or *Suddenly in Dark Night*) is a 1981 South Korean erotic horror thriller directed by Ko Young-nam. The story follows Kang Yu-jin, a wealthy biology professor researching butterflies, who hires a new housemaid named Mi-ok. She is the daughter of a shaman priestess who perished in a house fire. Initially, Yu-jin and his wife Seon-hee welcome Mi-ok, but Seon-hee grows uneasy after noticing a strange wooden doll the maid brought. Seon-hee has been having nightmares about that exact doll, and her suspicion and paranoia escalate, leading her to believe Mi-ok intends to kill her and take over the household. In a fit of madness, Seon-hee causes Mi-ok to fall to her death. Afterward, Seon-hee is haunted by visions of the doll attacking her, which severely erodes her sanity—leaving the viewer to wonder if the horror is real or imagined.
The cast includes Kim Young-ae as Seon-hee, Yoon Il-bong as Kang Yu-jin, and Lee Ki-seon as Mi-ok, among others. Released in South Korea on 17 July 1981, the film drew 28,178 admissions. It later received its first worldwide Blu-ray release in early 2017 from Mondo Macabro.
