History

In 1989, when WSVN switched from NBC to Fox, it launched a local news magazine called Inside Story. Over time, the show moved away from hard news toward entertainment, and in 1994 it was renamed 7:30. After its timeslot shifted to air right after WSVN’s evening newscast, the program got a new name in 1996: Deco Drive, inspired by Miami Beach’s Art Deco District and Ocean Drive. The show officially debuted on January 8, 1996, on both WSVN in Miami and WHDH in Boston, but Boston dropped it after just six months. In its first month in Miami, Deco Drive earned a Nielsen rating of 5.8, meaning nine percent of all local TVs in use were tuned in. Originally designed to go head-to-head with national syndicated shows like Entertainment Tonight, Extra, and Access Hollywood, the program quickly pivoted to focus more on Miami after its poor performance in Boston. In April 2015, Deco Drive made a return to Boston, this time airing on WLVI, a CW affiliate that Sunbeam had bought in 2007 and which is a sister station to WHDH.
