History

On the Red Carpet first appeared in 2002 when KABC used it to brand its local Academy Awards coverage before ABC’s national broadcast. After the Oscars, the site stayed active and grew its audience. On March 14, 2010, the Sunday after the Academy Awards, it became a weekly series on KABC. Seven other ABC-owned stations and San Diego affiliate KGTV soon picked it up. In fall 2010, the show moved to the Live Well Network, a national digital subchannel, adding Chris Balish as co-host until his departure in 2012. A live Oscar special in 2012 included college journalists from the Academy’s Red Carpet Journalist Contest helping with interviews. On September 14, 2013, the series shifted to national syndication with a single host, mostly on ABC affiliates, airing Saturday or Sunday afternoons against sports. The OTRC.com website closed on June 27, 2014, with the show relying on social media for content. The syndicated program ended after its September 13, 2014 edition, though the On the Red Carpet name continued for KABC’s Oscars coverage. In later years, the brand expanded to cover other awards shows and film festivals.

Format

On The Red Carpet aired for half an hour each Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. on KABC, designed as a weekend slot show. Stations scheduled it in the access hour and late-fringe time-slots. It was sold on an all-barter basis, with four minutes local and three and a half minutes national ad time per episode. Hosted by Miss USA 2007 winner Rachel Smith and produced by KABC-TV’s news department, episodes were shot on location. The show included celebrity news, exclusive set visits, first looks at upcoming film and television projects, and one-on-one interviews with Hollywood talents.
