Last updated

The House of Bourbon is a European dynasty originating in the Kingdom of France as a branch of the Capetian dynasty. Bourbon kings first ruled France and Navarre in the 16th century, and a branch came to rule Spain in the 18th century, which remains the current Spanish royal family. Other branches held thrones in Naples, Sicily, and Parma. Today, Spain and Luxembourg have monarchs from the House of Bourbon.

Reader's Guide

The House of Bourbon's significance lies in its long and widespread rule across Europe, shaping the political history of France, Spain, and Italy. Bourbon branches also ruled in Naples, Sicily, Parma, and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Today, the dynasty continues through the Spanish royal family and the Grand Ducal family of Luxembourg, whose monarchs descend from Grand Duchess Charlotte's marriage to Prince Felix of Bourbon-Parma. The Bourbons are the only extant legitimate branch of the House of Capet, and all legitimate living members are direct agnatic descendants of Henry IV through his son Louis XIII.
