Indore State was a Maratha kingdom ruled by the Holkar dynasty, lying in what is now Madhya Pradesh with its capital at the city of Indore. After 1857 it was a princely state inside the Central India Agency, protected by the British and entitled to a 19-gun salute.
The state covered 24,605 km2 and counted 1,325,089 people in 1931, spread across 3,368 villages and towns such as Maheshwar, Khargone and Mehidpur. Its rulers bore the title Maharaja Holkar, and their court drew on Jagirdars, Sardars and other landholding nobles. The state joined India after independence and became part of Madhya Bharat.
Lore & Background
Indore's rise began around 1720, when the local pargana headquarters shifted there from Kampel as trade grew. The Nizam recognized the Peshwa's right to collect chauth from the region on 18 May 1724. On 29 July 1732, Peshwa Baji Rao I granted 28 and a half parganas to Malhar Rao Holkar, founder of the dynasty, and he later became subahdar of Malwa.
His daughter-in-law Ahilyabai Holkar moved the capital to Maheshwar in 1767. Defeat in the Third Anglo-Maratha War led to an agreement with the British on 6 January 1818, making Indore a protectorate; Dewan Tatya Jog is credited with keeping the Holkars on the throne. The capital returned to Indore on 3 November 1818, and the city became home to a British Residency and later the Central India Agency headquarters.
Reader's Guide
Under Maharaja Tukoji Rao Holkar II, who reigned 1852 to 1886, Indore saw planned and industrial development, and railways arriving in 1875 helped trade flourish under later rulers. The city gained electricity in 1906, a fire brigade in 1909, and a master plan by Patrick Geddes by 1918. In 1926 Tukoji Rao III abdicated after being implicated in a murder case. The last ruler, Yashwant Rao Holkar II, signed the instrument of accession on 1 January 1950.
