Lords of Waterdeep (video game)

Digital adaptation of the Waterdeep board game.

Last updated

Lords of Waterdeep is a digital adaptation of the physical board game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Playdek developed the iOS version, which Wizards of the Coast released on November 21, 2013. Android and Steam versions followed on September 1, 2017. Critics praised the game for its gameplay and mechanics, and it was frequently cited as one of the best digital board games available on mobile platforms.

Players can compete solo or with friends, assuming the roles of the Masked Lords, the anonymous rulers of the port city of Waterdeep. The objective is to earn the most victory points, primarily by completing quests, to outscore rival Lords.

The game received positive reviews. Shaun Musgrave of TouchArcade gave the iOS version 4 out of 5 stars, describing it as a well-designed board game with a strong digital conversion. He commended the single-player AI’s difficulty and the ease of local and online multiplayer.

Max Eddy of PCMag awarded the iOS version 4.5 out of 5 points and an Editor’s Choice award, calling it “fun and strategic” and noting it “looked and played great.” He praised the in-depth tutorials and stated that no prior knowledge of Dungeons & Dragons was necessary. J.P. Grant of Paste described the game’s mechanics as “intricate” and considered it one of several “outstanding” digital board games. In contrast, Rob Zacny of VICE criticized the game as a “bad teacher.”
