A Dungeon Master provides narration for quests, with Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, who co-created Dungeons & Dragons, contributing to early voiceovers.[1] In 2014, IGN placed it at number 11 on its ranking of top Dungeons & Dragons titles.[2]

Making and release

Turbine spent two years developing the game.[3] Pre-order customers got a head start on February 24, and the general public could play starting February 28.[4] By April 2008, the subscriber count was under 100,000.[4] Beta testing resumed in June 2009 for a planned free-to-play subscription model.[4]

The Eberron Unlimited upgrade, which launched in summer 2009, brought the free-to-play model.[5] Subscriptions rose by 40 percent by October 13, 2009, following the switch to free-to-play.[5] On December 17, 2012, a beta version for OS X became available.[6]

What the cited sources add

The game teams moved from Turbine to the newly formed indie studio Standing Stone Games.[7] Assurances were given that fresh development on the game would persist following the transition.[8]
