Plot

In mid-16th-century London, a good and wise king rules with peace and compassion until he falls ill. His greedy captain of the guard, Pete, plunders and terrorizes the country for nearly a decade in the king's name. One winter day, three beggars—Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto—try to get money for food when Captain Pete's carriage, filled with stolen food, passes. Pluto chases a sausage from the carriage into the castle, and Mickey knocks on the door to retrieve his dog.

A soldier mistakes Mickey for the mouse prince and lets him in. Pete lectures the soldier, pointing out the real prince in class with his teacher Horace Horsecollar and valet Donald Duck. The prince hears Pete handling Mickey and Pluto roughly and orders them brought to him. Pete kicks Mickey through the door and forces Pluto out.

Inside the palace, Mickey meets the prince, who is his exact doppelganger except for a British accent. Bored with his life, the prince convinces Mickey to exchange clothes and roles, reassuring him that the royal ring will identify the true prince. Disguised as a beggar, the prince tricks Pete into kicking him out and meets Goofy and Pluto, though Pluto senses he is not his master. The prince witnesses soldiers stealing a chicken from Clarabelle Cow and her children, learning that Pete's men have been slandering the king's name for greed and power.

He stops a carriage of stolen food by showing his royal ring and returns the food to the people. Pete's soldiers try to stop him, but the prince escapes with help from Goofy and the villagers.
