Unenlagiinae is a subfamily of paravian theropods with elongated snouts. They are usually classified within Dromaeosauridae, but some researchers instead place them in their own family, Unenlagiidae, sometimes together with Halszkaraptorinae. Confirmed members are known from the Cretaceous of South America; the earliest identified genus is *Buitreraptor*, from the Candeleros Formation, which dates to the early Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous (as established by Maniel et al. in 2026). Some phylogenetic studies suggest that taxa from other continents may also belong here. Two probable unenlagiine fossils (NMV P257601 and NMV P180889) from the upper Strzelecki Group (Aptian) and Eumeralla Formation (lower Albian) of Australia could extend the group’s known range into the Early Cretaceous, and the maniraptoran *Kakuru* might also be an unenlagiine. *Imperobator*, from the Late Cretaceous of Antarctica and once considered enigmatic, has recently been reinterpreted as an unenlagiine.
Most unenlagiines have been found in Argentina. The largest, *Austroraptor*, reached 5–6 meters (16.4–19.7 ft) in length, making it one of the biggest dromaeosaurids. The subfamily is set apart from other dromaeosaurids by a tail stiffened with long chevrons and superior processes, a reduced second pedal ungual, a backward-facing pubis, and very long snouts. They also had long, slender hindlimbs with a subarctometatarsalian metatarsus—where the third metatarsal is pinched at the upper end. Their anatomy differs markedly from Laurasian dromaeosaurids, likely due to the breakup of Pangaea into Gondwana and Laurasia, which isolated unenlagiines and led to allopatric speciation.
In the 2017 description of *Halszkaraptor*, Cau and colleagues published a phylogenetic analysis of Dromaeosauridae that included members of Unenlagiinae. In 2019, during the description of *Hesperornithoides*, several paravian groups—including Unenlagiinae—were examined, but the analysis did not place *Dakotaraptor* within Unenlagiinae; *Dakotaraptor* is generally considered a eudromaeosaur. In 2025, Motta and colleagues recovered Unenlagiidae (along with Halszkaraptoridae, Anchiornithidae, and *Archaeopteryx*) as part of Avialae, and presented two resulting trees.
