Saurolophinae is a subgroup of hadrosaurid dinosaurs. For much of the 20th century, these mostly crestless hadrosaurs were grouped together under the name Hadrosaurinae, which stood in contrast to the crested Lambeosaurinae. However, that name comes from the genus *Hadrosaurus*, and later research showed *Hadrosaurus* to be more primitive than both the lambeosaurines and the other dinosaurs once called "hadrosaurines," such as *Edmontosaurus* and *Saurolophus*. Because of this, the name Hadrosaurinae was either abandoned or limited to *Hadrosaurus* alone, and the larger group of traditional "hadrosaurines" was renamed Saurolophinae. Some recent work has suggested that *Hadrosaurus* might belong within the same evolutionary branch as other non-lambeosaurine hadrosaurids, but this placement remains debated, and the current consensus places *Hadrosaurus* as a basal hadrosaurid outside both Saurolophinae and Lambeosaurinae.
