Centrosaurinae, meaning "pointed lizards" in Greek, is a subfamily within the ceratopsid group of large, four-legged, ornithischian dinosaurs. Their fossils are mostly found in the northern part of the ancient landmass Laramidia—what is now Alberta, Montana, and Alaska—though a few isolated species have turned up in China and Utah. These dinosaurs are recognized by a prominent horn on the nose, short horns above the eyes, and a decorated frill extending from the back of the skull. Aside from *Centrosaurus apertus*, every adult centrosaurine also sports spike-like ornaments midway up the skull. Studies of skull, snout, and frill shapes show that centrosaurines are distinct from other ceratopsian groups. There is also evidence that males had a long adolescence, with their sexual ornaments only developing in adulthood.
The subfamily was first named in 1915 by paleontologist Lawrence Lambe, with *Centrosaurus* as the type genus. Under the PhyloCode, it is defined as the largest clade that includes *Centrosaurus apertus* but excludes *Chasmosaurus belli* and *Triceratops horridus*. In 2016, Ryan and colleagues divided centrosaurines into three tribes: Nasutoceratopsini, Centrosaurini, and Pachyrhinosaurini. Nasutoceratopsini is the largest clade containing *Nasutoceratops titusi* but not *Centrosaurus apertus*. The other two tribes belong to a group called Eucentrosaura, defined as the smallest clade containing both *Centrosaurus apertus* and *Pachyrhinosaurus canadensis*. Centrosaurini is the largest clade containing *Centrosaurus apertus* but not *Pachyrhinosaurus canadensis*, while Pachyrhinosaurini is the opposite—the largest clade containing *Pachyrhinosaurus canadensis* but not *Centrosaurus apertus*. Most recently, in 2024, Mark Loewen and colleagues named the tribe Albertaceratopsini while describing the new species *Lokiceratops rangiformis*, defining it as all taxa more closely related to *Albertaceratops nesmoi* than to *Centrosaurus apertus*.

Within the United States, Diabloceratops and Machairoceratops push the range southward to Utah, while Yehuecauhceratops, a nasutoceratopsin from Coahuila, Mexico, represents the southernmost known occurrence on the continent. For decades, no centrosaurine fossils had been identified anywhere outside Western North America—until 2010, when Sinoceratops was reported from Shandong Province, China. Some researchers still question whether Sinoceratops truly belongs within the subfamily, but if it does, it would have had to migrate from North America to Asia. Current evidence points to a Laramidian origin roughly 90 to 80 million years ago, a timeline reinforced by the discovery of Menefeeceratops, the oldest known centrosaurine.
