Tyrannosaurinae is one of two extinct subfamilies within Tyrannosauridae, a group of coelurosaurian theropods. It contains at least three tribes and multiple genera, with all known fossils coming from Late Cretaceous sites in western North America and east Asia. Tyrannosaurines were generally larger and more heavily built than their relatives, the Albertosaurinae, although the alioramins were more lightly built. The subfamily includes Lythronax, one of the oldest known tyrannosaurids, and Tyrannosaurus rex, the youngest and most famous member.
The first tyrannosaurid remains were teeth collected by the Geological Survey of Canada, named *Deinodon* ("terrible tooth") by Joseph Leidy in 1856. In 1892, Edward Drinker Cope described isolated vertebrae as *Manospondylus gigas*, a find largely ignored until the early 2000s, when it sparked controversy because the material actually belonged to, and had naming priority over, *Tyrannosaurus rex*. In 1905, Henry Fairfield Osborn named two specimens from Montana and Wyoming, collected during a 1902 American Museum of Natural History expedition led by Barnum Brown. He initially considered them separate species: *Dynamosaurus imperiosus* and *Tyrannosaurus rex*. A year later, Osborn realized they were the same species. Because *Tyrannosaurus* appeared one page earlier in his original article, the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature gave priority to that name.
The next described tyrannosaurine was *Tarbosaurus*, originally thought to be an Asian species of *Tyrannosaurus*. In 1955, Evgeny Maleev named a large skull from a 1946 Soviet-Mongolian expedition to the Gobi Desert as *Tyrannosaurus bataar*. That same year, he named another specimen, PIN 551–2, as *Tarbosaurus efremovi*. In 1965, A.K. Rozhdestvensky recognized that *Ty. bataar* and *Ta. efremovi* were the same species, with the latter being a younger individual, and recombined the species as *Tarbosaurus bataar*.
The 1970s brought two new genera. *Daspletosaurus* was published in 1970, based on a partial skeleton (CMN 8506) discovered in 1921 near Steveville, Alberta, by Charles Mortram Sternberg, who had thought it was a new *Gorgosaurus* species. Dale Russell later identified it as a new genus.
