Gremio Lusitano is an amateur soccer team from Ludlow, Massachusetts, founded in 1922 in a garage on Franklin Street. The club, whose name roughly translates to 'Portuguese Union', has competed in the New England Division of the American Soccer League during the 1930s and has been an amateur or semi-professional club for most of its existence. Its home games are played at Lusitano Stadium, which is owned by the club.
Teams founded
Over its history, the club has operated under several names. In the 1937–38 American Soccer League, it played as Lusitano S.C., and for the 1938–39 season it used the name Ludlow Lusitano in the ASL's New England Division, reaching the National Amateur Cup final in 1952. For the 1956/57 season, the team was known as Ludlow S.C. After the division folded in 1953, the club joined various regional leagues before returning to the ASL.
Under the name Ludlow S.C., it entered the National Challenge Cup in 1984 and 1985, and overall Gremio Lusitano played in that competition four times. The club also founded the Western Mass Pioneers of USL League Two after being unable to use the name Gremio Lusitano due to a USISL condition prohibiting ethnic team names. Between 2004 and 2009, the club owned the Western Mass Lady Pioneers of the W-League.
