Four-time U.S. Open Cup champion and one of America's oldest clubs.

Last updated

New York Greek American Soccer Club is an American soccer club from New York City that currently plays in the American Premier Soccer League and the Cosmopolitan Soccer League. Formed in 1946 by Thomas Laris, it is one of the oldest American soccer clubs in existence and has won the National Challenge Cup four times, in 1967, 1968, 1969, and 1974. The team plays its home games at the Metropolitan Oval in Maspeth, Queens.

History

The club, formally known as Greek American Atlas Astoria, was founded in 1946 by Greek-American Tom Laris. It has a long-standing rivalry with New York's Cypriot team, the Pancyprian Freedoms, another multiple National Cup champion. The team currently plays in the 5th tier of the American soccer pyramid under the USASA in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League, using the Metropolitan Oval in Maspeth, Queens. Between 2001 and 2012, the club won five of eleven Eastern New York Championships.

The Greek Americans have won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup (formerly the National Challenge Cup) four times, from 1967 to 1969 and in 1974, making them one of only two teams, alongside Seattle Sounders FC, to win the tournament on three consecutive occasions. After not qualifying for the Open Cup since 2005, the club returned in 2012, losing 2–1 in the first round to Reading United of the USL's Premier Development League. In 2014, the Greeks re-entered the Open Cup via their USASA Amateur Cup regional championship, seeded in the second round; they defeated Ocean City Nor'easters 2–0 before falling to Richmond Kickers in the third round.

That same year, after appearing in three consecutive National Cup finals, Atlas won the trophy for the first time by beating Guadalajara FC 4–2 in the final.
