Human Resistance

Scattered survivors fighting for their lives in a world overrun by demons.

The Human Resistance is a loose, uncoordinated collection of humans in the anime series Devilman Crybaby who fight back against the demonic invasion. Unlike a unified faction, these scattered groups operate independently, often resorting to desperate and brutal tactics in their struggle for survival. There is no single leader or centralized command; Ryo Asuka, while a key figure, does not lead any organized resistance group.

Lore & Background

The Human Resistance is not a formally organized group. The series depicts chaotic, scattered human reactions to the sudden emergence of demons rather than a coordinated resistance movement. Ryo Asuka operates independently, using his knowledge and resources for his own enigmatic purposes, but he does not lead or command any human resistance. Ordinary humans fight demons with whatever weapons they can find, often forming small, temporary alliances. The resistance's actions are marked by desperation and internal conflict, with no overarching strategy or central figure like Ryo guiding them. The group's existence is defined by its fragmentation, not by unity under a single leader.

Reader's Guide

Louis Guiabern is the primary antagonist players must understand to navigate Metaphor: ReFantazio's story. He is protected by the king's magic, which prevents popular candidates from being harmed outside certain exceptions, meaning direct assassination is impossible without special means. Players must seek a spear that can kill him without incurring the king's magic. Louis has multiple allies, including Zorba (who can reanimate the dead), Junah (who later betrays him), Basilio, and Fidelio.

Basilio joins Will's party after Louis kills Fidelio. Louis' popularity can be manipulated; he warps Will into a human during a public duel, causing Will's popularity to plummet. To counter this, players must break magla-infused crystals that incite insanity among commoners to regain popularity. Louis' final form is a human merged with the Charadrius, with three masks that must be destroyed to reveal his twisted face. His last attack inflicts endless magla, which Will counters with the power of kings.

Did You Know?

The Architect of Chaos

Louis Guiabern serves as the primary antagonist in Metaphor: ReFantazio, a role defined by his orchestration of the King's assassination and the subsequent curse placed upon the prince. While the protagonist Will initially believes Louis is solely responsible for these atrocities, the narrative reveals a complex web where Louis was actually used as a scapegoat by the Sanctist Church leader Forden. Despite this manipulation, Louis remains a formidable force who preaches the dangers of monstrous creatures known as humans and demonstrates exceptional skill in hunting them.

His ambition extends beyond mere power; he seeks to transform all life into these human forms, believing only the strong deserve survival. This ideology drives him to manipulate political landscapes, including warping Will into a human during a public duel to destroy his rival's popularity. Ultimately, Louis's journey is one of betrayal and radical transformation, culminating in a desperate bid for absolute control through the Royal Sceptre.

A Sympathetic Villain

Designed by renowned artist Shigenori Soejima, Louis was crafted with the specific intention of being as appealing as the protagonist, effectively functioning as a second main character. This design philosophy is reflected in his reception, where critics have hailed him as a breakout star and one of the finest villains in Atlus history. Unlike traditional antagonists driven purely by malice, Louis possesses a tragic depth rooted in his identity as an elda from a village destroyed by the church he once respected.

His descent into villainy stems from feeling betrayed by an idealist king who failed to protect his people. This backstory renders him sympathetic despite his brutal actions, such as ordering the destruction of Strohl's village or sacrificing his own allies when they cross his path. Critics have drawn comparisons between Louis and iconic figures like Griffith from Berserk or Lucifer from the Megami Tensei franchise, noting how his charisma and tragic motivations elevate him above standard evil archetypes.

The Political Gambit

Louis's rise to power is intricately tied to the unique magical laws of Euchronia, which prevent any candidate from seizing the throne by force without popular support. This constraint forces Louis into a complex political game where he must outmaneuver rivals like Forden while protecting himself from assassination attempts, such as the one made by Grius during the royal funeral. To bypass these protections and eliminate his enemies, Louis relies on a loyal cadre of followers, including Zorba, who can reanimate the dead, and others motivated by the promise of improving life for their paripus race.

However, this alliance is fragile; betrayal from Junah and the death of Fidelio at Louis's own hands fracture his support base. His strategy involves manipulating public perception, using magic to incite insanity among commoners via magla-infused crystals, and eventually creating a star realm to isolate his final confrontation with Will, showcasing his mastery over both political intrigue and supernatural warfare.

The Final Descent

In the climactic stages of Metaphor: ReFantazio, Louis's psychological unraveling becomes as significant as his physical power. After being defeated in his Archdemon form and escaping via his skyrunner CharadriUS, he succumbs to overwhelming anxiety during a final confrontation with Will's allies. This mental collapse causes him to merge physically with the machine, transforming into a grotesque human form adorned with three masks that hide his twisted visage.

Even as his allies sacrifice themselves to hold off hordes of humans, Louis attempts one last desperate measure: inflicting an endless amount of magla upon his enemies. However, Will, now infused with the power of kingship, withstands this assault and destroys Louis's human form after shattering his protective masks. The antagonist's end marks the conclusion of a Tournament for the Throne where he sought to prove that only strength matters, ultimately failing against a protagonist who united the kingdom rather than dividing it.
