Ryo Asuka
Akira's childhood friend, who sets the Devilman story in motion.
Ryo Asuka is Akira Fudo's childhood friend in Devilman Crybaby, the 2018 Netflix series directed by Masaaki Yuasa that updates Go Nagai's manga to the 21st century. He rescues Akira from a gang led by the rapper Wamu, and, believing the only way to defeat the demons is to take their powers, proposes that Akira unite with a demon, which turns Akira into Devilman.
Lore & Background
Ryo later reveals on television that the track star Moyuru Koda and the athlete Miki 'Miko' Kuroda are demons, and Akira, disgusted by Ryo's apathy toward the chaos he has caused, sets out with Koda and Miko to gather other Devilmen to protect humanity. In the ending, twenty years after the extinction of the human race, Akira fights Satan and dies at Ryo's hands.
