Uniforms and Logos

The Old English D since 1934, the script "Detroit" on the road, and orange only on the road uniform.

The Tigers have worn essentially the same home uniform since 1934: a solid white jersey with navy blue piping down the front and an Old English "D" on the left chest, white pants, and a navy blue hat with a white letter D in the blackletter typeface popularly referred to as "Old English". On the road uniforms the D on the hat is orange and a script "Detroit" appears across the jersey, a design first used in 1930.

Background

The current road uniform was first worn in 1994, initially with racing stripes, then stripe-free from 1995 to 1997, and now with navy piping inspired by the mid-1950s road uniforms; before readopting the orange-D all-navy cap the Tigers wore two cap variations with an orange brim, one with just the orange D in 1994 and one with a tiger walking through a white D until 1997. From 1960 to 1993 the road uniforms carried block "Detroit" lettering, with orange trim added in 1972, and were worn pullover-style from 1972 until 1984. In 1960 the uniform read "Tigers" in script form for one season before the traditional design was reinstated.
