Augusta Lynx (1998–2008)
First ECHL franchise to fold mid-season.
The Augusta Lynx were a minor-league professional ice hockey team based in Augusta, Georgia. They played their home games at the James Brown Arena and competed in the ECHL. The Lynx had affiliations with the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning and the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals. Their name was a play on the golf term “hitting the links,” referencing the Masters golf tournament held annually in Augusta.
The team folded on December 2, 2008, midway through the 2008–09 season, when it announced it was suspending operations and voluntarily giving up its league membership. This was the first time in ECHL history that a franchise ceased operations during a season.
The Lynx began as the Raleigh IceCaps in 1991, then moved to Augusta in 1998. That move came a year after the Hartford Whalers relocated to North Carolina and became the Carolina Hurricanes. After the Lynx folded, the Augusta Riverhawks of the Southern Professional Hockey League replaced them, starting play in the 2010–11 season. In 2025, Augusta was granted an expansion ECHL franchise set to begin play in the 2027–28 season. That team will revive the Augusta Lynx name, though it is a separate franchise.
