Phantom Zone Projector
A humane exile that traps the living in a timeless void.
The Phantom Zone Projector is a device created by Kryptonians to exile dangerous criminals into the Phantom Zone, a prison-like parallel dimension existing outside the space-time continuum. Rather than executing prisoners, Krypton abolished the death penalty and utilized this technology to trap inmates in a state of suspension where they do not age or die. First appearing in Adventure Comics #283 (April 1961), the device was created by Robert Bernstein and George Papp for stories featuring Superman. It serves as the primary mechanism for banishment, allowing criminals like General Zod and Faora to be sealed away while remaining conscious observers of the universe they can no longer touch.

Background
In pre-Crisis history, Kryptonians used the projector to seal criminals into capsules with crystals attached to their foreheads to erase criminal tendencies. Gra-Mo was the last to receive this punishment before it was abolished in favor of direct transport to the Zone. Inmates like General Zod, sentenced to 40 Kryptonian sun-cycles (54.8 Earth years), and Faora, sentenced to 300 Kryptonian sun-cycles (411 Earth years), resided there as telepathic, insubstantial ghosts.
Post-Crisis continuity reimagined the device within Superman's Fortress of Solitude, used to access Kandor or trap villains like the White Martians. Various characters independently discovered similar zones: Bgztlians called it the "Buffer Zone," White Martians named it the "Still Zone," and Loophole referred to it as the "Stasis Zone." In The New 52, Jor-El suggested entering the Zone when Krypton was about to explode, though Zod appeared with other prisoners instead.
