Traverse began his major junior career with the Shawinigan Cataractes of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) after being selected fourth overall in the 1991 QMJHL entry draft. He recorded 14 points in 59 games as a rookie and was traded to the Saint-Jean Lynx during the 1992–93 season. In his first full season with Saint-Jean, he posted 15 goals and 52 points in 66 games. He was scouted by NHL Central Scouting and ranked as high as sixth among QMJHL players before being taken by Ottawa in the third round of the 1992 draft.

Traverse spent several seasons developing in the American Hockey League (AHL) with Ottawa's affiliates, including the Prince Edward Island Senators and Worcester IceCats, and also played in the International Hockey League for the Grand Rapids Griffins. He made his NHL debut on December 30, 1995, in a 4–1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. His first NHL goal came on January 2, 1999, against goaltender Martin Brodeur in a 6–0 win over the New Jersey Devils. He later played for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, and Dallas Stars before leaving North America in 2009 to play in Germany's Deutsche Eishockey Liga with the DEG Metro Stars and Hamburg Freezers.
