Jack Campbell (ice hockey)

Jack Campbell is an American former professional ice hockey goaltender. Born on January 9, 1992, in Port Huron, Michigan, he was inspired to become a goaltender by his older cousin Marshall, despite efforts from his father, uncle, and coaches to steer him toward other positions. As a youth, he played in the 2005 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Detroit Little Caesars team, which lost its first game but went on to win the tournament. Campbell later played for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, where he set franchise records for lowest goals-against average and most career shutouts, and earned a gold medal at the 2009 and 2010 World U18 Championships. He was drafted 108th overall in the 2008 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection but initially chose the NTDP before joining the Windsor Spitfires in 2010. After a difficult first season, he was traded to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in a major deal involving multiple picks and players.

Selected 11th overall by the Dallas Stars in the 2010 NHL entry draft, Campbell made his professional debut with the Texas Stars in the AHL in March 2012, earning his first win and first shutout within his first few games. He made his NHL debut with Dallas on October 20, 2013, in a loss to the Anaheim Ducks, and later helped the Texas Stars win the 2014 Calder Cup. After struggling with injuries and a reassignment to the ECHL in 2015—a period he described as difficult for his mental health—he rebounded with 11 wins in 14 AHL starts. In June 2016, he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings for defenseman Nick Ebert. With the Kings, he earned his first NHL win on February 27, 2018, and his first NHL shutout on October 11, 2018. He developed a friendship with teammate Jonathan Quick and attended the 2018 NHL Awards as Quick’s “backup,” carrying a towel and water bottle.

Campbell joined the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2020, where he emerged as an effective starting goaltender and was named to the NHL All-Star Game in 2022. After the 2021–22 season, he signed with the Edmonton Oilers but performed poorly. He was waived by the Oilers in November 2023 and assigned to their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, before being bought out at the end of the season. Internationally, Campbell represented the United States at the junior and senior levels, backstopping the U.S.
