Jason Robertson is an American professional ice hockey left winger for the Dallas Stars in the NHL. The Stars picked him in the second round, 39th overall, at the 2017 draft.
Robertson was born in Arcadia, California, on July 22, 1999. His parents, Mercedes and Hugh, already had season tickets for the Los Angeles Kings, and all their children grew up as hockey fans. Robertson started playing around age four or five. When he was ten, his family moved to Northville, Michigan, to give him better chances to skate. He played minor hockey for teams like Little Caesars and the Detroit Kings AAA squad, then spent a season with the Don Mills Flyers in the Greater Toronto Hockey League, where he put up 28 goals and 33 assists for 61 points. His team finished second in the 2015 OHL Cup.
Instead of joining the Omaha Lancers of the USHL, Robertson committed to the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL, who had drafted him 62nd overall in 2015. He made the opening roster at 16, the youngest possible age. His first OHL goal came on October 7 against Oshawa, and he scored his first junior hat-trick on December 11 in a 4–1 win over Sault Ste. Marie. By Christmas break, he had 16 goals—the most of any 1999-born rookie—and finished his first season with 18 goals and 32 points in 54 games. Those 18 goals were the most by a Kingston 16-year-old since Anthony Stewart. In September 2016, he played in the CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game.
The next season, Robertson started on Kingston’s top line with Warren Foegele and Ted Nichol. After Foegele was traded, Robertson became the offensive leader, scoring 26 goals and 47 points in 33 games post-trade. Despite the Frontenacs scoring the fewest goals in the OHL that year, Robertson finished with 42 goals and 81 points in 68 games—24 percent of his team’s total. He added 5 goals and 18 points in 11 playoff games before Kingston was swept in the second round. NHL Central Scouting ranked him 14th among North American skaters, and Dallas took him 39th overall in the 2017 draft.
After attending Stars training camp, Robertson returned to Kingston as an assistant captain for 2017–18. He clicked with linemate Linus Nyman; by November 9, both had 20 goals, with many of Nyman’s assists on Robertson’s tallies. Gabriel Vilardi later centered their line.
