McKenzie began playing organized ice hockey with the Golden Minor Hockey Association. He played for the Burnaby Winter Club U15 team alongside Landon Ferraro, then for the Vancouver North West Hawks U18 team before joining the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) for the 2007–08 season. While on the third and fourth lines, he finished his rookie season with three goals and seven assists and won the BCHL League Championship title. In 2008–09, he set career highs with 30 goals and 34 assists for 64 points over 53 games, participated in the Canadian Junior Hockey League Prospects Game, was named to the BCHL Interior Conference All Star Team, and represented Team Canada West at the 2008 World Junior A Challenge, scoring one goal to help earn a silver medal.
