Story

The story begins on the world of Lapis, where Magic Crystals and Visions—physical manifestations of thoughts and feelings—exist. It follows Rain, a young knight from the Kingdom of Grandshelt who feels overshadowed by his father Sir Raegan. While traveling on an airship with his childhood friend Lasswell, they encounter Fina, a young woman trapped in a crystal who asks for help. She leads them to the Earth Shrine, where the Earth Crystal is attacked by the Veritas of the Dark, a member of the Sworn Six of Paladia. The Dark Lord's motive is unclear but appears to involve destroying all crystals.

Development

Square Enix first showed off Brave Exvius at a Final Fantasy event in Tokyo back in November 2014, alongside a couple of other projects. The game launched in Japan in October 2015. Two developers from the mobile hit Brave Frontier, Eiji Takahashi and Hisatoshi Hayakashi, handled directing and producing duties, while composer Noriyasu Agematsu wrote the music. Character illustrations came from Yoshitaka Amano, known for his work on earlier Final Fantasy titles. Before the Japanese release, a limited Android beta ran in August for players who had signed up on Square Enix’s Japanese site. An English version was announced in 2016, with a beta in Sweden and a pre-registration push. It officially launched worldwide outside Japan on June 30, 2016. A companion app called Final Fantasy Brave Exvius: Digital Ultimania arrived in June 2019.

Reception

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius received mixed or average reviews from critics according to Metacritic. TouchArcade gave it a score of 3.5 out of five, noting it may not fully please fans of either Square's classic RPG series or the other camp it aimed to attract. By January 2016, the game had been downloaded 5 million times, and by October 2020 it reached 45 million downloads across the Apple App Store, Google Play, and Amazon App Store. Mobile titles including Exvius helped Square Enix achieve profitability in 2015. Revenue estimates from Sensor Tower for April 2018 showed the Japanese version grossing on the App Store and Google Play, and the English version grossing on both platforms.
