Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix
A prequel exploring the origins of four mercenaries in a pandemic-ravaged future.
Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix is an action-adventure game released in 2001 for the PlayStation. It was created by Kronos Digital Entertainment and published by Eidos Interactive. The story takes place before the events of the first Fear Effect game.
The year is 2048, and the setting is Hong Kong. A global pandemic called EINDS (Environmentally Induced Nucleotides Degeneration Syndrome) has caused widespread social collapse, turning theft, murder, and terrorism into common business practices. The game follows four characters: Hana Tsu-Vachel and Rain Qin, who work as freelance operatives; Royce Glas, a former soldier past his prime; and Jacob "Deke" Decourt, a ruthless assassin. The plot focuses on how these four unlikely individuals come together, each with their own personal motives, and become caught in a conspiracy that goes beyond politics or survival. The adventure moves through a futuristic Hong Kong, the walled city of Xi'an, the lost tomb of China's first emperor, and finally the mountain island of Penglai Shan.
The gameplay uses cel-shaded characters over pseudo-3D environments, with looping full-motion video for animated backgrounds. Players control all four main characters at different points, offering multiple perspectives on the story. The game uses a third-person view, and the controls are fixed regardless of the character's position or facing direction, though an optional traditional control scheme is available. Weapons include pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, handheld EMPs, a taser, and a unique melee weapon for each character.
Puzzle-solving is the main focus, not combat. Enemies are few and placed in fixed positions, not dynamic ones. The design aims for tension and suspense rather than constant action. This makes the game arguably less difficult, but characters can die easily from enemy attacks, and there are many instant-death scenarios. The fear gauge from the original game returns as a variation on the standard health meter.
According to Metacritic, the game received favorable reviews. Jeff Lundrigan of NextGen wrote that anyone mature enough and owning a PlayStation should buy it, calling it not disappointing and asking for a sequel. In Japan, Famitsu gave it a score of 27 out of 40.
