Plot
Empress Elisabeth of Austria, called Sissi, travels in Hungary and values the political friendship of Count Andrássy. When he confesses his love for her, she returns to Vienna to avoid intimacy. Court life frustrates her: Franz Josef stays at his desk, and his mother Sophie interferes in raising Sissi's daughter Sophie. Sissi decides to return and meets Franz on his way to bring her back. They vacation in Bad Ischl, but Sissi falls ill with possibly fatal tuberculosis. On doctors' orders, Franz Josef lets Sophie remove the child from Sissi's care. Deprived of husband and daughter, Sissi travels to Madeira and Corfu, losing her will to live. Her mother Ludovika nurses her and restores her zest for life through idyllic walks. Oberst Böckl, the clumsy bodyguard, provides comic relief.
