Ornithomimosauria, meaning "bird-mimic lizards," were theropod dinosaurs that looked a lot like modern ostriches. These fast, omnivorous or herbivorous dinosaurs lived during the Cretaceous Period across Laurasia (present-day Asia, Europe, and North America), with a possible presence in Africa as well. Deinocheirus, once thought to be a primitive ornithomimosaur, is now classified as a deinocheirid—a more derived member of Ornithomimosauria. To resolve this, Sereno proposed in 2005 a new clade, Ornithomimiformes, defined as all species closer to Ornithomimus edmontonicus than to the house sparrow, effectively carving out a node that would contain both ornithomimosaurs and alvarezsaurids as sister groups.
