Caenagnathidae is a family of advanced caenagnathoid dinosaurs that lived during the Cretaceous in what is now North America and Asia. They belong to the group Oviraptorosauria and are closely related to the Oviraptoridae. Like other oviraptorosaurs, they had specialized beaks, long necks, short tails, and were likely covered in feathers. For a long time, their relationships were confusing. Raymond Martin Sternberg first named the family in 1940, thinking they were flightless birds. It was only after skeletons of related oviraptorids were found that scientists realized they were actually non-avian theropods. More complete caenagnathid fossils also showed that *Chirostenotes pergracilis*, originally known only from a pair of hands, and *Citipes elegans*, first thought to be an ornithomimid based on a foot, were both caenagnathids.

**Discovery** The name *Caenagnathus*—and therefore Caenagnathidae—means "recent jaws." When first discovered, the lower jaw looked so much like that of paleognath birds (like ostriches) that researchers thought caenagnathids were close bird relatives. Roughly a dozen species have been named, yet the true number of valid taxa remains uncertain. The case of Chirostenotes pergracilis, described from a pair of hands, illustrates the problem perfectly. Feet from the same region were once given their own name, Macrophalangia canadensis, but a later specimen preserving both hands and feet supported merging them. A subsequent partial skull bearing hands and feet then suggested that Chirostenotes and Caenagnathus might represent the same animal, though current analyses continue to treat them as closely related but distinct genera. Caenagnathus sternbergi, erected on a single jaw bone, has been variously interpreted as belonging to Chirostenotes. Before the 2010s, only two to six species were commonly accepted; new discoveries and re-evaluations of older material have since pushed that estimate toward ten.
