Smoke
A tactical obscurant for vision denial and strategic maneuvering.
In Counter-Strike, the smoke grenade is a tactical utility that deploys a dense cloud of aerosolized particles to obscure vision, enabling strategic movement and area denial. It was introduced in Condition Zero and Source, not in the original 1999 mod or CS 1.6 era. In CS:GO, the smoke lasts approximately 18 seconds (or 18.5 seconds in some patches), and while bullets pass through it, visibility is heavily obscured—trajectories are not blocked. Shooting a smoke grenade in flight does not alter its path in standard canon.

- Cannot be shot in flight to alter trajectory
Lore & Background
The smoke grenade in Counter-Strike is a fictional tactical device designed for concealment and strategic play. Its composition is not based on real-world combustion by-products; instead, it releases a thick, non-toxic aerosol that scatters light to create a visual barrier. Unlike real smoke, it does not involve burning fuel or produce toxic compounds, and its particles are engineered for optimal obscuration without harming players.
In Their Own Story
The hallway smelled of cordite and warm polymer. Kova held his knife out in front of him, counting the seconds under his breath. Fourteen. Thirteen. The smoke was thickening, a grey wall swallowing the doorway to A site. He could hear the CTs' footsteps on the other side—two, maybe three—pacing, confused, their crosshairs sweeping a void where a sniper used to be.
Eleven. Ten. The cloud was full now, a perfect sphere of particulate fog that made the world beyond it a suggestion rather than a fact. He could feel the bullet trajectories dying against it, the faint *thwip* of rounds that never arrived.
"Now," he whispered into his comms. And the five of them poured through the grey like water through a broken dam, their boots finding the tiles by memory, their rifles finding the terrified silhouettes that had no time to react. The smoke did not kill. It simply made the world small enough that only the prepared survived it.
Reader's Guide
Smoke can be used for defensive and offensive capabilities in the military, such as a smoke screen. Smoke emissions may contain characteristic trace elements. Some components of smoke are characteristic of the combustion source. Guaiacol and its derivatives are products of pyrolysis of lignin and are characteristic of wood smoke; other markers are syringol and derivates, and other methoxy phenols. Retene, a product of pyrolysis of conifer trees, is an indicator of forest fires. Levoglucosan is a pyrolysis product of cellulose. Markers for vehicle exhaust include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hopanes, steranes, and specific nitroarenes.
